Column: Adjusting the compass

A week ago today, my friend Ryan died. I had never lost a friend before. I wasn't sure what to say or think. I felt disoriented for days. I had to go to class, work and fulfill other duties, but it was like my ears were ringing from an M-80 that exploded too close to my head.

Bulgar better build for the Fall

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

-26 minutes ago by Editorial Board

Levi Bulgar said he's bringing back the Summer Senate.

As student body president elect, he has a great idea. However, more initiative needs to be taken to ensure the success of this plan, and Bulgar himself needs to set bigger goals for himself.

The organization stems from the executive board and their cooperation would set precedence for other members.

This semester has been a stressful one. Long hours and late nights have consumed my life, but I wouldn't trade the experience I gained. I've thought a lot about what I would write in my last column. My intention was always to address my last column as Editor in Chief to everyone I love, because I couldn't have survived this semester without them.

Unwritten code of college athletics

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

22 hours ago by The Daily Texan, U-Wire

Either the media are at the feet of college athletics or college athletics are at journalists' throats. There's no in-between.

Last month, The Daily Texan reported on its blog that the Austin Police Department suspended an assault with injury investigation in which Longhorns backup quarterback John Chiles was a suspect.

Increasing beer prices? Blasphemy!

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

1 day ago by Aaron Gaudette, Mustang Daily (U-Wire)

In case you haven't heard, we have an imminent crisis on our hands.

The news-savvy college student has likely heard that food prices are on the rise, to the point that Third World governments are being overthrown to protest the unavailability of life's most basic commodity.

Freshmen must strive for intellectual diversity in university setting

Louisville Cardinal, University of Louisville, KY

1 day ago by Darren McVey

Way back during the Freshmen Orientation of 2004, I had the pleasure of hearing Professor Phil Laemmle's famous "Biscuit Speech." Laemmle was a great teacher and great man who made a positive impact in the lives of numerous students. His annual Biscuit Speech, delivered at freshmen orientation, was about how college freshmen are young and stupid, but by listening to folks like him, they could fix it together.

Trimming fat: value over quality

The Murray State News, Murray State University, KY

The staff editorial is the majority opinion of the editorial board of The Murray State News.

For months there have been discussions, debates and wringing of hands across campus about how to cope with the state budget cuts and what the money crunch means for every University department.

Things freshmen should know before entering college life

Louisville Cardinal, University of Louisville, KY

4 days ago by Heather White

Four years ago when I first stepped foot on the University of Louisville campus, I'll never forget that ball of apprehension lodged into the pit of my stomach. I felt in over my head and scared. However, it took no time at all to learn the tricks of the trade, so to speak, of college life.

Obama is better than you

Shield, University of Southern Indiana, IN

5 days ago by Kyle Knight

With plenty in America calling Barack Obama's comments elitist, maybe it is time the United States took a look in the mirror. Currently the saber-rattling and bellicose rhetoric emerges at a thunderous pace as Washington and the military amp up possible war with Iran.

Column: Live your life like Ryan

Daily Egyptian, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL

Words usually flow freely to me. I can flex my vocabulary muscles on cue and rattle off 17 synonyms for the word depressed. On Tuesday night, all words escaped me. That's when SIUC senior Ryan Rendleman died in a car accident. Ryan was a friend to all his co-workers at the Daily Egyptian and an inspiration to us all.

Once again, our ode to final exams week

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

5 days ago by The Daily Illini Editorial Board

And it came to pass.

Early in the morning toward the last

day of the semester,

There arose a great multitude smiting the books and wailing.

And there was much weeping and

Gnashing of teeth,

For the day of judgement was at hand

And they were sore afraid, for they

had left undone

Those things which they ought not to have done,

And there was no help for it.

Prevent pregnancy: Put your penis on the pill

The Journal, Webster University, MO

5 days ago by Bryan Coplin

It's time that Pfizer made an oral contraceptive for men. Admittedly, there are reasons besides the prevention of pregnancy for women to take oral contraceptives, but it seems to me that it's a little misogynistic for a major drug company to make a pill that cures the inability to achieve an erection but not to make a pill to help men do their part to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Tears, Jeers and Cheers

The DePauw, Depauw University, IN

At the end of each year, the editorial staff examines all our issues for the topics and controversies that dominated our headlines. We've seen a last-second Monon win, the loss of a favorite Mexican restaurant, three tragic deaths of members of the DePauw community and the announcement of our next president.

COMMENTARY: Coming of new chapters bittersweet for editor

COMMENTARY: Coming of new chapters bittersweet for editor

College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky University, KY

With every end, there is a new beginning. Haunted by the surgical scars from two blown ACLs and the deep throbbing pain of a strained UCL in my elbow, my collegiate baseball career was left in shambles. For two years, I fought through the injuries, but in vain.

Reflecting on four years at DePauw

The DePauw, Depauw University, IN

6 days ago by Robin Lamkin

One of the perks of knowing that I'm graduating in 12 days (not that I'm counting) is that I now feel like I can be completely honest about my experiences at DePauw. I haven't always spoken up, even when I wanted to. I always felt I wasn't qualified to speak my mind on certain subjects.

Men's movement proves patriarchy isn't pretty

The Journal, Webster University, MO

6 days ago by Amber Russell

Everyone has heard of the "feminist movement," but many people are unaware of a growing movement in a similar direction - only with our male counterparts. There are men's rights activists in growing numbers in the country - including St. Louis - who feel they are an oppressed minority and want to vocalize how they are affected by sexism just as much, if not more, than women.
